New Zealand deer breeders are known throughout the world for their technically sophisticated deer farms. In your 1970s, agricultural pioneers in New Zealand began the main deer farming using with animals captured inside wild to build their own herds. Since red deer increased with population and became insects, New Zealanders developed a new industry of capturing wild deer and selling deer meat, called venison, and antler purple velvet, which has proven therapeutic value, abroad as an export product. It wasn't a long time before agricultural entrepreneurs began establishing deer farms which were stocked with wild deer. Farmers began cultivating carries of domesticated deer that never spent when in the wild. Then they next began breeding red deer, selecting for desirable traits such as meat production and antler improvement in stags. Breeders do not focus just on that genetics of stags; studies show that stags receive 60% with the genetics that contribute to antler development from them mothers. Breeders are serious about antler development because considered one of their products, the purple velvet, comes from antlers.

West Europe, particularly Germany, Scandinavia and the country are the main markets for New Zealand venison. New Zealand deer farmers derive about three-quarters within their export income from venison and nearly one-quarter from deer velvet. While most New Zealand deer facilities raise red deer, a few farms raise European fallow deer species or United states elk. Deer breeders are concerned with enhancing the genetics of any breed of deer being farmed.
